“MOROSE DELECTATION” : Photos From the Exhibition

MOROSE DELECTATION, which is still on view at The Book Beat Bookstore + Gallery, in Oak Park, Michigan, is an exhibition of works on paper from ten of the contributors to BLACK EYE 1. The exhibiting artists are: Max Clotfelter, Andy Gabrysiak, Ian Huebert, Kaz, James Moore, Tom Neely, Paul Nudd, Onsmith, David Paleo and Stephen William Schudlich.

If you were unable to attend, or are unable to, photographs of the exhibition are now available for viewing by clicking on the image above. Additionally, a catalog of the exhibit will be forthcoming from Rotland Press, in a limited edition of 100 signed and numbered copies. More information will be available soon.

BLACK EYE 1 Cover Sketches by Onsmith

Over at the blog of cartoonist Onsmith, contributor to BLACK EYE 1 and one-half of team “Onsmith + Nudd,” who is responsible for the cover to BLACK EYE 1 as well as the limited edition letterpress print that accompanies the book, he posts a great sketchbook page he made while working up designs for the cover. I’ve reproduced it here, but take a hike over to Onsmith’s site and take a tour of all the great work he has on display.

“It’s not particularly funny.”

Over at the The Comics Journal, Sean T. Collins provides the second full review of BLACK EYE 1, and it isn’t entirely a positive one. Mr. Collins finds some faults with the anthology, and has a few ideas as to why it doesn’t work for him. There are some well-reasoned points of his that I agree with while there are lesser points that I do not, but click on the image and head on over to TCJ and take a look for yourselves and feel free to weigh in.

INKSTUDS RADIO PROGRAM ON “BLACK EYE 1″

BLACK EYE 1: Graphic Transmissions to Cause Ocular Hypertension was the subject of a great conversation between myself, comics historian Jeet Heer, cartoonist Onsmith, and host Robin McConnell, on the Canadian radio program INKSTUDS. Jeet and Onsmith both give some great context and insight into the kind of humor BLACK EYE traffics in, as we chew on many of the issues the book touches upon. I’m really grateful to have had the opportunity to present the book on a forum like INKSTUDS. The program’s playlist includes songs by Harry Nilsson, The Tiger Lillies, Tom Waits and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. You can listen to it on the INKSTUDS site by clicking on the radio above. Also available as a podcast on iTunes.
